Questions for “Introduction: ‘Worship at the Altar of Convergence’” to the book Convergence Culture by Henry Jenkins

1.     Why does convergence happen in the communication and media fields? What are the two conditions that lead to convergence?

Media convergence is the cooperation between several different industries in the media. It takes ‘old’ and ‘new’ media and makes them coexist as one. Convergence occurs within the brains of individual customers and through each one of their social interactions with others. One condition that leads to convergence is the ability for information to travel through different forms of media and spread at a rapid pace. The other condition is when media companies choose to spread their information through these different forms instead of only circulating it through one media platform.

2.     What are the three different kinds of digital convergence discussed in the article?

The three different kinds of digital convergence discussed are the flow of content across different media platforms, the cooperation between several media industries and the ‘migratory’ behavior of media audiences.

3.     What cultural and social impacts does digital convergence have in addition to technological changes?

Digital convergence has helped help the media industries go from only allowing a few people to share there work, to allowing almost everyone in the world to show their work through different forms of media such as the internet. Based on this, the culture has become one that speedily shares information in different ways.

4.     Do the new media displace old media in the history of media development? Why or why not?

Although the digital revolution paradigm claimed that convergence meant new media would take over old media, real world media problems proved this theory to be wrong. After the dot-com crash in 2000, many began believing that new media didn’t change anything. Soon there began a new idea believing that convergence is basically an old concept taking on new meanings. The author is basically stating that new media doesn’t simply overthrow the old media, but that the old media simply changes its tune to fit the new standards.

5.     The convergence happens from both the top-down corporate level and bottom-up grassroots level. How do both levels change the traditional concept of media consumption?

Both top-down corporate level and bottom-up grassroots level media ultimately intersect with each other. They both had to reevaluate their understanding on different media aspects such as production, distribution and consumption of media.

6.     What does digital convergence in media indicate for communication and journalism professionals in the future?

For the future communication and journalism professionals it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with digital convergence. It’s not as simple as it once was with newspapers and magazines, now the all of that is becoming digitalized. It becomes hard for these future professionals to keep up with the ever-changing media convergence.
